Fun and viewer review
The moral of the story is, it pays to take the stairs. This was pure  hokum. It would have worked had MacArthur been portrayed as a heel throughout only to get his comeuppance at the end. But in fact there is no indication until the end that his love for the  woman is not real. He even rejects the money offer in the form of a "scholarship" and position.  So why does he suddenly become a mercenary at the end? It doesn't make sense. It's odd that Herrmann's TORN CURTAIN cue was rejected for that film and used here! I see no relation between Poe's tale, as someone suggested, and this story, apart from the ending. But that's like saying   that THE PUBLIC ENEMY rips off LITTLE CAESAR because in both films the gangster dies at the end!
